Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were married on this day in 1946. They married when Jimmy was 21 and Rosalynn was 18. The marriage has lasted, lo, these many years because Rosalynn is so easy-going and because Jimmy is good at whispering those two wonderfully romantic little words, "Yes, dear."

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter celebrate their wedding anniversary today. To show their love Rosalynn knitted Jimmy a new tool pouch, and he built her a house in the backyard for disadvantaged birds.
Later today everybody in Plains is invited over for lemonade and peanut sherbet.

Joan of Arc was acquitted on this date in 1456. Unfortunately, she had already been burned at the stake, which tended to temper somewhat the joy of the occasion. That's the trouble with the death sentence -- it's much harder to reverse.

Ringo Starr was born on this day in 1940. Ringo was the Beatle everybody mentioned last. He was a superstar playing 4th banana.
But before you feel sorry for Ringo, how many other rock drummers can you name?

horizontal rule

Ringo Starr was born on this day in 1940. They say, when Ringo steps out of the shower with a towel on his head, he's a dead-ringer for the late Yasser Arafat.

On this date in 1941 the U.S. occupied Iceland. That was because there was a war going on in Europe, and Iceland was the only place we could get hotel reservations.

Actor Burt Ward was born on this day in 1940. He played Robin on TV’s "Batman" back in the ‘60s. Now he’s in semi-retirement suffering from the long-term effects of batpole-burn.
He’s also put on a little weight. He can’t get into his tights anymore. Even his cape doesn’t fit.
And he had to get a bifocal mask.

Today is Saba Saba Day in Tanzania, Tanabata Day in Japan, and on this day in 1828 Charles Green of London made an hour-long flight in a balloon while riding a pony.
Sounds like a great day for a party at the state hospital.

The National Cherry Festival is this month in Traverse City, Michigan. And though it's been held every year since 1928, festival officials have yet to answer the important question: Where do you put the pits?

The original Morris the Cat, who became famous on TV in the 9-Lives cat food commercials, died on this day in 1978. He was 17, which was 119 in cat years.
Ten years after he died Morris ran for president. Which sounds a little strange until you remember that cats and Shirley MacLaine have nine lives.

By the way, Morris wasn't really finicky, he was just plain senile.
Actually, Morris's favorite food was Kellogg's 40% Fish Flakes.

Italian histologist Camillo Golgi was born on this day in 1843. Golgi studied the human nervous system and discovered the Golgi cells, the Golgi complex, and the Golgi synapses. He was a wonderful guy, but you have to be either a genius or mentally ill to understand why.

Today is Saba Saba Day in Tanzania, marking that fateful day in 1954 when Tanzania's Tanu Party was organized. The Tanu, you'll recall, is the group that swept into power by promising Tanzania's 13 million residents indoor plumbing -- thus paving the way for Tanzania's fastest-growing industry -- French-fried bathtub rings.

horizontal rule

Queen Elizabeth woke up on this day in 1982 to find a strange young man, Michael Fagan, in her bedroom at Buckingham Palace. It just showed, if you're traveling in Europe, some tour groups offered more exciting side trips than others.

On this date in 1930 Arthur Conan Doyle died promising to return from the dead. So far, he hasn't come back. But he does have an appointment next week for brunch with Shirley MacLaine.

Morris the Cat died on this day in 1978 at age 17. They say Morris was such a tough old cat, (Yo-Yo Ma) paid $25,000 for his guts.
And is still fiddling around with them.

horizontal rule

"God Save the King" was sung for the first time on this day in 1607. It's not one of your more popular tunes today. You won't find it on any jukebox. Although Prince Charles is sometimes heard humming it in the shower.

horizontal rule

Bandleader Doc Severinson was born on this day in 1927. Doc was famous for his "loud" suits for years on "The Tonight Show with  Johnny Carson." In fact, one year Doc was named the Top 10 Worst Dressed Men all by himself.

horizontal rule

On this day in 1986 the world population reached five billion. The World Population Institute says 250,000 babies are born every day; that's 10,000 new babies every hour. So no matter what you've heard lately, apparently most of the world is still not gay.

horizontal rule

Designer Pierre Cardin was born on this day in 1922. These days it's tough being a designer. Everybody wears Dockers, and now Dockers makes everything. I can hardly wait for Dockers Depends.

horizontal rule

horizontal rule

horizontal rule

The U.S. annexation of Hawaii was authorized on this day in 1898, making the grass skirt as American as Mom and pineapple pie.
In fact, the grass skirt is still in style today on Hawaiian beaches -- probably because most wahinis don't have the nerve to wear grass bikinis.

horizontal rule

On this day in 1865 Mary Surratt, convicted of conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln, became the first woman to be hanged by the U.S. government. When Mary was hanged with five male accomplices it was no surprise to her friends. In high school Mary had been voted the girl most likely to hang around with the guys.

horizontal rule
