Comedy Calendar

May 12, 2008

On this day in 1971, Mick Jagger married Bianca. The hardest part was trusting Keith Richards to hold the ring.

On this day in 1984, South African prisoner Nelson Mandela saw his wife for the first time in 22 years. Without missing a beat, he said "Is that a new outfit?"

Comedian George Carlin was born on this day in 1938. George's "Seven Words You Can't Say on TV" are now the seven words most often heard on cable.

Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing, was born on this date in 1820. Florence taught her students the three basic rules of nursing: keep the patient clean, keep the patient comfortable, and don't laugh when the patient's gown gaps open.
Florence revolutionized the medical profession. She proved that more lives could be saved if the nurses took care of the patients and the doctors played golf.

Florence Nighingale brought dignity to nursing. Before that, men were always pinching nurses and making dumb jokes about bedpans. Men were really crude in the good old days.

Socates was born in Greece on this day in 470 B.C. Socrates was one of those bleeding-heart liberals who taught his students about morality, honesty, and ethics. So they convicted him of corrupting youth and forced him to drink hemlock.
In those days hemlock was often prescribed for someone suffering from a severe case of morality.

Nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale was born on this date in 1820. In her career, she saw more backsides than an NYPD Blue cameraman.

Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was born on this date in 1820. Florence carried a pet owl everywhere she went, so they called her "The Lady with the Lamp." Hey, they couldn't call the founder of modern nursing "The Weido with the Owl."

Comedian George Carlin's birthday is today. He starred in Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The movie, not the Clinton-Kennedy dinner debate at Hooters.

On this day in 1971 Mick Jagger married Bianca Perez Morena de Macias in St. Tropez. Bianca wore a see-through wedding gown, and the ceremony lasted two hours because the padre kept losing his place.

Elizabeth Taylor married Eddie Fisher on this day in 1959. Liz said, "We will be on our honeymoon for 30 or 40 years." And the whole world said, "Yeah, right."

Yogi Berra was born on this day in 1925. Everybody likes Yogi. Which proves, I suppose, that the easiest way to be liked is to stop trying so hard to make sense.

Today is National Receptionists Day, which is always on Yogi Berra's birthday. Which, for some reason, seems appropriate.

Today is National Receptionists Day. I called our receptionist to tell her how much I appreciate her, but she put me hold.

Henry Ford sued the Chicago Tribune for $1 million for calling him an "anarchist" on this day in 1919. Ford won the suit and awarded damages of six cents (true), which he wisely ploughed right back into the company.

Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was born on this day in 1820. Florence set up a training school for nurses and was the first person to each nurses how to say the word "bedpan" with a straight face.

Florence Nightingale was the first nurse to insist on giving her patients a bath every day. Most patients enjoyed the bath -- but didn't like being hung out to dry.

Elizabeth Taylor married Eddie Fisher on this day in 1959. And vice, of course, versa.
Eddie was #2 or 3 or 4. When it comes to Liz's marriages, after a while you just lose count.

Comedian George Carlin was born on this day in 1938. He used to make fun of the seven dirty words you can't say on TV, but that routine is not nearly as daring now -- mainly because he can only remember three of them.
