Specializing in beginners and family groups, Northstar resort has the only stable on Lake Tahoe that offers specially raised horses that are gentle and well-suited for even the most timid and inexperienced riders. Located six miles from the North Shore, Northwood's trails meander through the breathtaking meadows and rolling hills of the scenic high Sierra. Riders must be at least 7 years old for a trail ride, although children under 7 can take pony rides with adult supervision.

Northstar's weekly youth horse camps are geared toward riders ages 8-17, including two hours of riding each day and classes about horse behavior, grooming, how to tack up safely, types of tack, and proper feeding. Rates for the horse camp are $450, except during the weeks of June 19, June 26 and Aug. 28, when rates are $350.

Guests interested in single rides can go on a one-hour guided group ride for $35 (a special rate of $20 an hour from June 10-23); a two-hour guided group ride for $60; or a one-person, one-hour private guided ride for $60, extra riders cost $40 per person. Pony rides are $10.
